Final Project for Design Research

A Lifetime of Creations

About

In my junior year at the University of Texas at Dallas, I took a Design Research class to improve my skills in research design and learn the concept of knowing the client and consumer. We learn about how to conduct the interview, what kind of questions to ask, how to collect and manage data and base on it, and how to make the best decision for the design team. For this final project, our assignment was to create a wireframe of the app for the newly developed coffee shop called "Beanery" (hypothetically). Two other students and I conducted interviews, collect data, and created a wireframe. On the website, I will explain how we come up with the wireframe, how we connected interviews, and what we learn from this project to become a successful UX researcher. This project can be divided into four parts, interview, collecting data, creating a wireframe, and Summative research.

Interview

To achieve a successful and satisfy the consumer's need was to conduct an interview. As a group, we come up with the interview question to make the best decision for the design team. Each of us asks about a variety of age ranges and backgrounds that goes to coffee shops frequently. Students, friends, family members, and participants who are older and younger. We created 10 questions on the website.

Collecting Data

Based on the data we collected, one of our team put it into a graph to make the data more visible to the design team and easier to understand. Based on the data, we notice three important factors. Importance of the menu visible on the home screen, the importance of a loyalty program and keeping track of them, and order and pay ahead so users do not have to wait in the cafe. On average, these three factors were higher in all demographics as shown on the graph. Wrote this discovery on a separate sheet to see the importance. Based on the data, we have to create a wireframe for the app.

Wireframe

On this subject, I was responsible to create a wireframe based on the data we collected from the interview. As a team, we each had a responsibility to complete our objective which is to accurately create a wireframe based on the data to give the best possible solutions to the design team. Analyzing the data, we learned that having a visible menu, loyalty program and pay forward feature was crucial to have in the wireframe. Making this my primary, I focused on the design to satisfy the user's needs. Also, I had an opportunity to create an additional feature in the wireframe, such as making reservations, a favorite screen, an Item screen, and a side menu, a total of seven screens. I put the details as much as possible to communicate to the design team easier. On the left, you will see detailed descriptions of all the features and buttons on the frame. The bottom of the frame has a description of why I chose the design. Having an opportunity to do the design was a fantastic experience because I could show my skills and what I can offer in this group project.

Challenges

In this project, I never had experience creating a design based on the analyzed data. As my first UX project, it was a challenge for me. First I screen analysis to analyze other cooperate design to study how the UX and user flow works on other apps. After learning the user flows of the cooperate design, I implemented the concept and new design to the project. It was crucial to create an efficient user flow and user experience to satisfy the user's needs. After I was finished with the design, I made a working prototype to experience what the users will see and feel when they use the app.

Wire frame

Based on the data we collected from the questions, I was responsible to create a wireframe for the project

Prototype

This is a basic prototype that I made to be in the shoes of the user and what they experience using the app. This app is testing the functionally and overall concept of the design and not final design of the app.

Summative Research

As our last part of the project, we had to conduct research based on the fact of the launch of the app. The way we conduct interviews, collect data from users, and how we apply that to future design. We discuss how to measure customer satisfaction. For example, tracking the amount of traffic and visiting time on the app and comparing that to the sales of the Beneary and seeing if the app is bringing new customers. This is the conclusion we made. Making three suggestions based on the article and research conducted.

Conclusion

For the group project, teamwork, communication, and each team's responsibility were important. We communicated throughout each responsibility we had and report the progress to the team. It was a great experience working in a group and resulted in a great report. I learned a lot from collaborating and need to improve more skills to fit the ideal design and user experience. Can not wait to work on the next group or personal UX project.

UI Final Design

UI final design was not part of the research that we have to do in this project, however, I wanted to learn more about UX/UI and Figma, so based on the data we collected, I created a UI design for Beanery app.  Below is a prototype that you can interact with.
